Feel like I should read some Ted Chiang. Is there a good place to start? Like an essential short-story collection?

Stories of your life and others.
And then watch Arrival, which is based on that short story.

He's mainly just got the two story collections, both pretty short - imo Stories of Your Life and Others is better; I'd start there & if you like it read Exhalation (also some good ones just a bit more uneven)

I found all of his stuff less interesting than Lui Cixin’s books. Ironically the movie Arrival is my favorite movie of all time so contradictions abound.

If you want an even more low-commitment test, get Stories of Your Life and Others, and try two stories: 1) Story of Your Life, and 2) Hell Is the Absence of God.
I think they're both amazing, but very different. If you don't like them you probably don't like Chiang.

Both collections are great. Not really any duds. Read one collection and you’ll want to read the other.

He blends Borges vibes with sci-fi better than anyone else in the past ten years. Highly recommended!
