I want to listen to an >hour-long podcast episode where several people wise to the relevant history argue about why none of the great sailing societies were able to adapt their knowledge and develop even (hang gliders eg) rudimentary aviation. Who would be the right people?

Maybe there was no line of sight to utility beyond a stunt Many Bronze Age cultures appear to have invented wheels for toys but not used them for carts or other practical vehicles. I guess because wheels with usable load capacity are much harder than PoC toy wheels.

Given how militarily useful even low-altitude reconnaissance would have been through many many centuries (and we saw record of people hoisted with kites as of 636 CE!) it seems that establishing control of the ability would have had clear and immediate utility
