Answering 5yo’s question about what a cable installation truck does.
“It makes the Internet work.”
“What’s the Internet?”

He is quite familiar with computers. We watch movies on them and I got him a $120 Chromebook that he plays SimCity on. But the idea of the Internet is more ethereal to him. I explained that it makes computers work.

Does he have a mental model of information on the computer versus elsewhere that you “go to” using a browser? Or is it all a single click soup for him?
Has he ever used his computer when disconnected from wifi and noticed what breaks?

It’s all part of the computer for him.
A couple times the wifi has been down and his reaction is “my computer isn’t working!”

Would be interesting to have him poke around and learn the boundaries of “not working” if he’s old enough

I think so too. He is a very logical thinker, and loves following/creating/modifying sets of instructions (eg directions on a map). So now trying to model the right questions to ask to debug / interrogate systems.
