im sure Amazon kills just as many internal products but they're much better at following through after they actually launch, which is largely just because better internal metrics and a better set of promotion-incentives to chase

As someone who once contracted with them I have a very different view. To me, they practice a "slash and burn" approach to contractors, vendors and employees. It is a strategy that has led many to ruin.

I have too, but as a management consultant, not contractor. Very pleasant and rewarding gig. But the slash-and-burn is a feature not a bug. If you can survive the Hobbesian lower levels, you get great power and opportunity to build ambitious things.

Not really. What you get is a lot of hate and anger that builds until it breaks. History is repleate with Bezos and versions of Amazon. Not a single one ended well and they ALL ended in violent death. I am aware it is by design, so is cutting your nose off to spite your face.
