Anyone happen to know what the most common clock chips are, for driving human-readable display clocks and watches?

I assume easiest way to this is with raspi or arduino (if efficiency and packaging are not primary concerns). You could technically do it with a simple quartz crystal (like a 555) a MUX for the 7 segment displays and some decade counters.

For watches, these are brand specific and called "movements". For example, the most common cheap casio watches (like F91) uses Movement 593. Which probably uses a quartz crystal with an integrated IC that counts and drives the LCD with alarm, light functions all integrated.

Unsure if this helps. But I think most of the classic casios use proprietary CMOS ASICs, which they always sell with the movement. Quick research on watch head forums gave me this image...
