Even at the height of the Cold War I don’t think “become like the Soviet Union” was ever either a popular or elite aspiration anywhere in the world 🤔 “Become like America” was usually the popular aspiration to the extent elites let American culture be visible, uncensored

disagree. you had economists like paul samuelson being like "yup central planning means you can do economics right, the USSR is going to overtake us in 1980, 1990, 2010, etc" (he kept on updating it in later editions of his economics textbook)
