The pile of problems and crises in the world (per capita) doesn’t ever really seem to change. What seems to change is what it’s worth to solve them. The less it’s worth, the more we just half-ass or neglect.

Same is true for individuals, but there are more bootstrapping mechanisms to make it worthwhile. The larger the group, the fewer the mechanisms. Until at the largest humanity scales we’re down to people yelling “Mars!” into the stuff headwinds of nihilism.
