While I’m hugely supportive of raising 20 or 2000 institutes to IIT standards, that takes time and afaik, the og 6 campuses are still considered a cut above. Broadening the label was start line, not finish line. Meaningful comparison would limit to campuses that existed 20y ago.

But definitely I feel like I’m from one of the last few cohorts in this migration cul-de-sac where heading to the US for grad school was the duh-brain-dead choice. Almost my entire batch accepted job offers from Tata or Infosys or similar as safetys. Almost none joined.

Those were the two choices. Emigrate or join one of the 2-3 large corps. The corps knew they’d actually yield like 5-10% of nominally accepted offers but would take it. Second tier supply was still ramping so low-yield IIT recruitment was a necessary evil for them.

Then in the early 2000s the opportunity space exploded. Startups, way more global MNCs recruiting, etc etc, Grad school emigration became the minority nerd choice. I’d probably still have gone the same today though.
