Poll: What percent of the audience of a major mainstream thing like LOTR or MCU would you guess is part of the core fandom? As in hanging out in forums, buying the merch, going to cons etc?
Conversation
I watch a lot of TV and blockbuster movies, have read many of the big properties that make it to screen, and am at least in the middle quintile of nerd knowledge on many works, but I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of anything. Definitely not in any fandom.

Like, the fandom knives seem to be out for The Rings of Power but I’m kinda looking forward to it and will watch it if it beats at least the Hobbit movies. I suspect most are like me. When things fail with non-fandom majority I think it’s for different reasons than with core fans

Do shitpost/meme fan subreddits count as forums?
Things like r/prequelmemes and r/lotrmemes have made it more palatable for people to hang out in forums without deep theorycrafting about lore etc.
Example: r/lotr 684k subs vs r/lotrmemes 1.3M subs
Doubt Memers go to cons
