Dunno, I’m wary of explanations that sound compelling but deny the agency of the individuals. It’s too pat. Clearly not all boys raised by single moms or with absent/deadbeat dads go “bad” and clearly some with present and seemingly good dads still go off the rails
reminds me of Chuck Palahniuks idea that fight club was about men who grew up without a "second father/mentor figure" or what op calls surrogate father. He says gen Xers were the first generation to not have that
