Not that I’d want to defend Ezra Klein, but “there’s an entire field of study” has always seemed to me to be a dumb whine. I mean if I write a future speculations article, astrologers could make that complaint. The value of a field must be demonstrated, not just asserted.

Sure. But to play devils advocate, why should I believe *your crowd* has anything better to offer? Feels like you’re just trying to intimidate with the authority of insider discourses, and demanding outsiders work to access and appreciate it. Ie you guys should pitch op-eds

Do they get read as much as he does? If not, the field is failing to compete with clickbait. I just react badly to “there’s a whole field” lines as in the OT of quoted thread. It’s discourse authoritarianism by privileged tenured gatekeepers who demand unearned public deference.

A lot of my own blogging and tweeting actually draws on my academic past/PhD world. I just never rest anything I say in public on that appeal to authority. It sinks/swims on its own public-memetic merits. Just a personal rule of engagement.

I don’t think that line is *ever* right. People who earn authority in a field must earn it all over again a public discourse. Not assert it. It’s not about Ezra. I expect nothing better from him.
