Recent events got me reflecting on stuff I’d forgotten… Closest I ever got to actually working in the aerospace industry was a couple of days working on a DARPA proposal with Lockheed Martin people circa 2005. Life would have gone a very different direction if we’d won 🤔

Today Lockheed Martin is a stodgy, bureaucratic defense contractor, despite making ninja missiles, but there was a time when it was bleeding edge management

The Empire mall in Burbank was the site of a Lockheed plant long ago, and the signage features classic plane models. This one features the Super Constellation — very distinctive non-Boeing/Douglas aesthetic. One of my favorites as a teenager.

You could write an interesting history of terrible Southern California malls with super cool aerospace pasts. Downey landing in Downey was where the Apollo landers were built as well as the first couple space shuttles. The highlight is now a Best Buy.
