39/ It's underappreciated how long it takes for new researchers to become productive. New grad students are often a net negative for two or three years. No company would hire someone who took three years to get up to speed. Any proposal against academia must account for this.

Second advisor got me all trained up, past qualifiers, and clear and non-angsty on direction. One of his first questions was “have you tried working it out with old advisor? I don’t want to be accused of stealing a student.” Until then I had no idea I was worth “stealing”
