If you're a STEM major, the US still remains the best place to go for higher studies. Based on discussions in social media, the US seems like a horrible place. But this is an illusion: the other countries aren't better; their problems are just less discussed.

I no longer think grad school is even worth it in most technical fields unless you’re on a full scholarship, in which case it’s more like a low-paid job If you’re paying for a masters, better to keep the money and use it to fund a much cheaper program of self-study with no debt

I think depending on the person, I'd consider it as an opportunity cost. After internship, GA/TA/... jobs, etc the costs lower down quite a bit, and it is worth considering the potential benefits against what the alternative is. For me, it was very much worth it.

been doing this but i keep losing out better job opps to those with masters and/or better certs. Only way to fight that I see is legit online masters that won't break the bank e.g. georgia tech's Masters in Comp Sci. 7k iirc.

With a full scholarship at a top college, there is still value because many students are unable to do the following on their own: 1. discipline to self-study 2. join a community with a high density of smart people optimizing for interestingness/ambition/adjective-of-your-choice)
