Think there’s any more to it than “coping with the present”? Memories are already malleable lies told by the brain; easy to construe them into a warm blanket. Humans also crave predictability as a survival mechanism & nothing’s more predictable than that which has already passed.

maybe to moderate the pace of change? if humans are always nostalgic for the past then they’re less likely to destroy great relics, architecture, art (etc.) in the pursuit of growth…
