People who speak European languages can't even hear the sound. It took me about 5 years before I could reliably. It is similar to Hindi speakers being unable to differentiate v and w.
Imagining what this thread could’ve been if voice tweets had stuck haha
Do y’all have any experience with ळ? Do you just hear ड?
It’s been interesting to me that the American accent’s “r” sound is actually pretty close. It’s just missing the tongue slap on the mouth floor.
The assortment of sweets and snacks we eat today is called फराळ / faral — it’s the word that I use to test if there’s any chance someone I know could possibly speak Marathi haha
If they can’t land the ळ right after the र, there’s no hope. Nobody’s done better than “farrarh”
One of the interesting Indo-European language family connections is that Latin doesn't differentiate v and w either. We teach people learning it that the Romans pronounced v as a w sound, but I wonder if it was closer to व.
