TIL this is called an aspirated retroflex consonant I think I can instruct people to make the sound mechanically but I don’t think they can hear it I have similar issues with v/w. I can mechanically produce the difference but hear it unreliably at best

When we go transhuman we should all just replace mouths with speakers for speech. Speech production is a ridiculous bolt-on janky feature for mouths.

This link seems to refer to ट rather than ठ English speakers seem able to get close to the former (the ordinary t as in plaTe is close) but can’t seem to do the latter at all

Linguist Peggy Mohan says that retro flex sounds are like a signature of India. Her claim that even Sanskrit got them after coming to India. Hence Sanskrit origin words outside of India don’t have that sound.
