I’m sort of foggy on this. So effectively you don’t need to bother with Presidential elections at all, and Congress elections will be permanently gerrymandered by incumbent party at the time the independent legislature theory kicks in. House and Senate freeze composition?

But since Congress and potus would still have real power, federal laws all snap sharply to GOP agenda, like federal abortion ban, and scotus backstops it all. Then what happens? Blue states assert state rights and…? I used to not bother thinking through scenarios > 3-sigma

the liberal / corporate / blue city power blocks are still power blocks and in a dominant economic position by default. liberal cessation was what created the country

it's definitely not in the domain of what's predictable exactly, depends on actual decisions and coalitions, highly path dependent, *but* the situation is metastable. you simply can't have the vast majority of the population *and* the economic center withstand right withdrawal.

in my opinion recent SCOTUS overrreach basically makes liberals a big tent. most likely either the center left makes a big comeback under some inspired leadership (please god let biden get a clue) or there is revolutionary energy in the counter culture again
