Et tu Brin? “Sentience” is a meaningless theology term.

I long ago predicted this would be the year that 'sentient AI' claims would proliferate. And that they would be bogus for some years, before coming true in a messy transition. Alas. Run, Eliza! news.google.com/articles/CAIiE

Humans like clean phase boundaries that seem to have deep significance Bet you at some point somebody will administer the mirror test to an AI trained to pass it and claim sentience for real, and Serious Philosophers™ will claim they’re now above chimps in “sentience”

We’ll go through another round of this bs and then someone will train a neural net to exhibit signs of pain and claim that’s the citizenship sentience test Anthropomorphic projection is a helluva drug It’s sentience turtles all the way down

so all of that more or less does indeed sound like bullshit, and yet, consciousness of a sufficiently advanced AI isn't something one can dismiss entirely out of hand we don't really know enough about human/animal consciousness to know whether, or not, machines can have it

"sentience" is a very fuzzy term. AI's are developing, and perhaps getting closer to humans. We in a huge space of possibilities. How close do we have to wander towards human minds before we should treat the AI's kindly?
