Started watching prehistoric planet on Apple TV… something surreal about how Attenborough takes his standard style for living species straight to simulated renderings of prehistoric ones. The CGI is really good. If you didn’t know you’d think it’s just a real nature documentary

The opening episode starts off with T-Rex vs Mosasaurus, which can’t be a coincidence since it’s almost the set piece of the Jurassic world movie (well almost… T-Rex and raptors shove the made up Indominus Rex into the Mosasaurus pond)

This is dizzyingly meta — the pop movie matchup kicks off the more serious documentary with cgi reconstructions, narrated by the guy who’s made a career doing real documentaries What do you even call these pure reconstructions? Simumentaries? Every detail is educated guesswork

Btw I’ve decided I don’t like mosasaurs… they’re boringly similar to sharks and whales. Not exotic enough. The Jurassic world portrayal was misleading.

But liked the first part of the simumentary. Especially the extended segment on pterosaurs and how the walk on land. The reconstruction of the ethology was a little too glib though… straight plagiarism from modern seabirds.
