one thing that’s weird to think about is what lightning would be like if I hadn’t decided to build liquidity ads

it’s a very imperfect project but you can trace a decent number of modern day lightning concerns back to their proposal and implications around the things we had to consider because of them

for example afaict the gossip v2 movement came out of conversations around how safe sharing utxos w/ an anonymous peer is wrt to chainalysis

pointed out that you’re leaking the same data rn in gossip anyway so it’s really not much of a privacy regression anyway; now we’ve got people actively thinking about how to change gossip to fix this (and whether we should or not)

lightning pool was built with liquidity ads in the review mirror, it was launched as a surprise to everyone else in the ecosystem and made some very different design decisions — i do wonder if it would have been built at all if ads hadn’t been in the picture

but here’s the cool thing: liquidity ads *exist*. you can do decentralized coinjoins with them ✨today✨

lightning *has* a decentralized way to source inbound liquidity that is *robust* against OFAC and KYC and brokerage requirements and centralized policies

it’s a small market (and might always be small), but it’s available and works!! it solves a very important problem for lightning in a decentralized and lightweight way
