Not counting 2nd hand through Amazon Amazon was already a thing when I got to the US… did spend a lot of time hanging out drinking coffee at Barnes and Noble and Borders browsing. But basically every book I’ve bought as an adult has been from Amazon.

I occasionally wander through them, but genuinely don’t get the appeal. I also stopped wandering through libraries basically the minute computerized catalogs became a thing.

Highly recommend making a point to check out local bookstores in every city you travel to. Has been incredibly rewarding on my adventures, and definitely leads to local place-specific gems & staff recommendations I’d never stumble across on Amazon.

Powell’s in Portland is well sorted and organized with lots of suggestions and themed sections. We mostly only go there when we have out of town guests though as something to do.

I think it's important to buy some books at almost absolute random, otherwise you're not getting a great sample. Sounds a bit spooky, but one of my favorite things to do is go through the books on sale after an old person dies. Just whatever books were in their house.
