It just hit me that the two ends of the political horseshoe have a strong shared concern with dignity. It is crucially important to certain personality types to never appear in an undignified or humiliating light. Two two solutions to that are trad and social justice.

The middle is for people who are not too bothered by looking ridiculous or undignified, which generally means that they are both less sensitive to humiliation and in environments where humiliation is less common AND less costly, ie middle class

Humiliation is high risk/high cost in societies with both steep class gradients, and strong class-linked lifestyle affordances. So I guess it makes sense that it's a deep-rooted adaptive response. I think the anti-humiliation response is more basic than disgust response.

There is a strong correlation with humorlessness, but they are not the same thing. What I'd call "horseshoe humor" is a stylized, controlled thing within a narrow local humor zone that presents low risk of humiliation.
