Got random media requests from CNN and WaPo today (said no to both). Some sort of major disturbance in the force. I've gone from basically 1-2 such big name media requests in a decade to two in a day?

I realized my heuristic for saying yes/no to media requests, big or small, is "Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people." Conceited perhaps, but I only talk long-term event trends or ideas. Average-Plus to Great zone.

(the requests weren't anything to do with me... just requests for talking-head commentary on stuff I have no particular insight into... I guess I've reached some sort of D-list "available for comments on Tech Things" tier of the matrix by accident)

Also, I kinda don't get what the point of cultivating a media presence is, at least for me. I've never gotten anything out of any media mentions. Did get a couple of significant gigs off a podcast appearance though, so there's that.

Enough people think your stuff here is cool, that's all. It's a trendsetting sort of thing. People see you retweeted by the right people, I bet, I bet that's what's happening.
