So said my first phd advisor who I did not get along with (good guy, bad match for me) a few weeks before matters came to a head and we broke up and I took a year off before returning to a new advisor and very different direction

Usually the best ideas gotta marinate in your mind for a while, so that creates discontinuous output
I think it was James Gleick's book on Chaos theory where he said all the major early contributors had negligible prior output
