Got update on India heatwave situation from parents. Really bad though they’re in relatively cooler part. Temperatures seem to be 5-8 C hotter than anything I experienced growing up there.
Welcome to the future I guess.

At some level it’s clear we’ve given up on hard choices and will be on whatever the default, unmanaged trajectory is until it becomes the unmanageable trajectory
We’ll get through the climate crisis, for some X% of “we”
Goal all around is now to be in the X%, not maximize X%

Secondary goal: if you make it to X% spin a tale to aestheticize it
Interesting shift in last few years is how compounding climate news has managed to punch through noise of Trumpism, Covid, denialism etc. and set up an ominous background ticking noise growing steadily louder

There's a Kim Stanley Robinson story where future historians looking back call these years The Dithering.

Idk, was there ever the relevant “we” making any relevant hard choices?
Like what should we be doing? Just tanking the US economy? China has to shut down and go back to mostly farming?
There’s no real alternative on offer currently. We’ll solve it with new tech like always.

you haven't looked hard enough at evolution.

How come you see the heatwave, have family in it, and it makes you think about mitigation less rather than more? Or am I misreading? You seem to be saying to give up and just survive, when there's so much that can be done to maximize X%, that also helps you

everyone talks about this like they’re an impartial 3rd party observer as opposed to a human being with a very real stake making active decisions about whether or not to make hard choices
and that’s part of the problem
objectivity here is a false god
