It’s a nice platform and we’ve had good times, but there was life before twitter and there will be life after

It feels like this is digital Ukraine on the eve of a profoundly stupid corporate war 🤔
I’m eyeing the exits to digital Poland aka discord

I suspect they're complementary, serving different needs. Twitter is more discovery/loose, Discord is more closed/deep. vgr has enough network to make the former less necessary.

Also fediverse doesn’t really work as a twitter substitute for dis overt anyway. Tried it. It’s its own thing that I don’t have as much use for.

The problem with the fediverse are the "pale copy" apps: "We're just like Twitter/Facebook/whatever, but with noone of your friends! And we cost money! And aren't quite as slick!"

Oh! I see you two really know about this stuff.
What would you suggest to an old man with excess compute and storage in his garage?

What kind of compute? A rack of recent hardware? A 20 year old desktop running windows XP?

😀 Run a post-apocalyptic network hub connected to ham radio?
Why do you have this grade hardware in your garage?

might have creative ideas for uses of this kind of thing
Unfortunately i haven't figured out anything better than just casually use it via a dozen VMs, including 2-3 terminals in different rooms. It's also not very portable when you suddenly need to GTFO.
