It’s almost creepy how seamlessly data and workflow state is transferred from old to new Mac hardware, it’s like a soul transfer/reincarnation. The downside is that your transferred state has exactly the same shitty entropy level it did on the last machine.

In the past buying a new computer meant a day of painful setup, but it also meant you got to spring clean your digital life and get something of a fresh start. Now it’s one grim death march to a bit-rotted grave, through multiple machines.

It's an illusion. If you've ever customized your user/group configuration on the *nix level to share state across multiple accounts, Catalina will just tear all that up and throw it in the trash. I found out the hard way.

I didn’t bother transferring from time machine back-up of my old iMac to my new MacBook Pro for that very reason. I just transferred documents of interest. Spotlight was useless on the old machine.
