Places that go from cold and snow (or torrential rain, which is almost as extreme) to blazing hot and back every 12 months calibrate you to think of the universe as 80% cyclic, 20% secular. Places like California with no seasons calibrate you to think it’s 20% cyclic, 80% secular

I wonder how much of Californian tech progress visions get their steady secular character from the local weather. People deal with cycles and “progress seasons”, but at a deep level don’t seem to believe in them. Their world doesn’t cycle; it marches up and to the right

I’ve steadily moved to less seasonal places through my life. Maybe it’s time to reverse the trajectory 🤔 Possibly strong seasonality and having to shovel snow again after 15y is what I need in my life again 🤔🤔 Doubtful but possible

i'd guess the salience of secular exponentials dominate the weather in most '1st world' psyches GPT / DALL-E iterations are a bit more remarkable than if it's snowing again & the metaverse has no climate ...but maybe it is the techbropocene

if eschatologies don't count, & there truly were no imaginings of a future in the ashes of Alexandria then my guess would be the predominant salience of seasons vs decades in preindustrial civilization twitter.com/dnlmc/status/1
