Hmm… I think standard dystopia just moved to the west coast , re “Today, the dystopia is no longer situated somewhere visible.”

I think you have to distinguish Sensate decay from Ideational decay to use Sorokin’s terms. New York had a trough and peak of Sensate decay/revival and is now in terminal Ideational decay. SF, LA, Seattle, Portland are still Ideationally alive, but in a deepening Sensate trough

Interesting. Not familiar with the Sorokin idea but will check that out. Id still argue that NYC *represents* the real city in US even though its not (as I argued in the Refactor Camp talk etc). But maybe internet has killed the idea of a real city hence the tv representation now

The show The Neighborhood has an interesting LA archetype city vibe. It is clearly neither the downtown NY or Long Island suburban vibe. The lower-middle-class black-and-white neighbor setup is closer to what we used to see in Midwest shows

I did notice that sometime in the 00s maybe, more movies started presenting LA as an actual urban place (density transit etc) rather than the more stereotypical version
