Unions today are either (1) outdated social infrastructure from a bygone era in older industries (like auto) or (2) a slow-motion murder-suicide by labor when management won't negotiate reasonably. In properly managed orgs, neither labor nor mgmt wants unions.

having thought about this for a while, including having one as a client for a decade, i think there is definitely a role for them but the discourse around them is totally impoverished

I’m actually not binary pro or against, but think in certain limited circumstances it is beneficial (eg unskilled labor, big employer with strong negotiating power, and high friction cost for employees)

They were a good idea (to shift market power to workers) when labor was scarce. In modern industry labor is surplus so they have no leverage. But, if we enter a low wage service economy, they're good again.
