Dolphins will take turns plunging into balls of sardines, or that one weird dolphin tribe that surfs up onto the beach in pursuit of fish.. but neither of those are performances. What about canines that howl? Maybe whale song? Both aural and not visual in nature…

I think awards and recognition for excellence are naturally motivating for the human psyche. Not so for any other species.

Language probably selected for extreme mimicry (obvious) and extreme policing (less obvious, but language only works if there is severe gate-keeping (so that everyone stays on the same page re grammar, vocab, etc). Those two together lead to performance...

Quite opposite. Hierarchy in all natural systems. Humans are only species capable of decentralization. But are we willing to let go of hierarchy? Or is it so much a part of us it's essential for multi-generational existence.
