My biggest disagree-but-commit position is that the AGI people are deeply and entirely wrong at the foundations about every philosophical question but will still invent the next era of computing. Like the alchemists seeking the philosopher’s stone invented chemistry.

In the future, it will be obvious that the sole purpose of science was to build AGI

did gpt3 exceed your expectations from a few years ago, or was it roughly on track, and if so did it change your thoughts on agi at all?

Impressive enough, but asking me if it’s “on track” is meaningless since I consider agi an ill-posed goal. Like asking if I think doing good is on track get me to heaven… OpenAI’s abandonment of the robotics program was more revealing to me.

GPT3 was overrated. After all I read about it I was surprised that it was fairly obvious that the text it produces shows no real understanding of the subject matter. I keep seeing these efforts as oversold. The slower than hyped progress on autonomous driving is another tell.
