CNN war coverage is all human interest tearjerker schmaltz about mothers and sick children and brave resistance. BBC World News is all big picture diplomatic maneuvering and summary state of war. Much prefer the latter. Detest the “find the narrative” impulse of American news.

Just the raw highlight data please. There’s a place for finding the narrative and it’s called Twitter.

Now checking out Arirang Korean news (in English). More like BBC.

India today is like a mix of excited tabloid style sports coverage and war porn. Lots of shots of equipment and dramatic moments.

The suffering is indescribably awful.
Still, CNN’s coverage is awful. For me it is as much about the anchors as it is about the subjects. Plus, most of their experts are of the US context and seem to have little to say about their failures. BBC coverage so superior.

Americans won't pay attention unless there's a teary-eyed mom with a harrowing story [and then cut to a commercial for fighting tough stains].

One man's opinion:
BBC, Reuters, AP = news
NYT, CNN, MSNBC, NPR = storytelling
And by "storytelling" I don't mean falsehoods or lying. I mean dramatic narratives for emotional effect. I much prefer fact-focused, pyramid-style journalism.

Narrative metastasized out of entertainment where it belongs into so many fields that should be centered on information and skepticism (journalism and business most of all). I think it’s a really underestimated factor in our general societal problems with epistemological decay.
