this fits really well with the Clueless / Loser divide - most people truly don't even notice or comprehend power talk. a few do but don't really desire it actually get along fairly well with power (named here as Sociopaths) by staying in their lane:

I think there's also a sort of non-doing element, where the people with true RDFs don't seem like it (cool people are simply cool) but people _trying_ to have an RDF, or trying to garner power are usually sort of obvious and easily dismissed (and: net less cool / powerful for it)

My consulting career is based on it but otherwise it’s just a modern version of a timeless ethos of power. Appreciating/adopting it is an visceral choice, like choosing to play extreme sports, not an intellectual one. Those who want to will always find a path to it in any age.

… there’s always other jobs. Take less comp, play fewer games. Greed is not so much a problem to be solved as a vice to be traded off against others, like sloth.

Throw cowardice into the mix of vices in the tradeoff. You can always walk away if you have the courage to face other kinds of harshness, like family being thrown into lifestyle distress or suffering yourself.
