Why is green mold green? Does it photosynthesize? If so why does it need to grow on organic matter? Why not rocks like moss?

Cursory review suggests that there are pigments in the spores. No information as to why or whether their interaction with light is evolutionarily conserved. However definitely not photosynthesis.

Fungi don't photosynthesize based on modern taxonomy. Green fungi might be mimicking environment / avoiding predators, or eating something that makes them green. OR they might be clear and have photosynthetic orgs (algae, cyanobacteria) incorporated somehow

Not for nothing but plants may be way more passively carnivorous than anyone realized. There's a theory that pine trees conspire with a fungus to kill insects then passively "eat" them. Shepherd's Purse herbs may have semi-carnivorous *seeds*.
