Amazing how much the appetite for large-scale casualties has plummeted since WW2. I suspect it’s a consequence of the high-tech weaponry being highly valued, not the people. The move away from conscription is also about keep the costly stuff out of clumsy amateur hands.

I would much more credit it (that diminished appetite/tolerance) to general societal culture advances and broad move away from ethnocentric nationalism into modern and postmodern sensibilities. Expanding circles of care, more overall wealth, lower deaths due to everything else

Honestly, the amount of training that they put into each individual soldier is incredible for most modern armies. Every soldier lost represents a massive amount of very necessary but very mundane knowledge.
