I guess we’ve moved from rhyming with 1920s to rhyming with 1930s ☹️

Nothing ever really changes, though for a change it’s not the US invading some place

I think this will be a quick, limited war, that will stop with some sort of precarious liminal status for the eastern regions… BUT, like Covid, it will trigger a pattern of frequent limited-war “waves” that last a decade or two. Not a continuous long slog like WW1/WW2.

WW3 — now on an easy installment plan

A precedent is possibly being set here for a non-Vietnam/non-Afghanistan type war. I can’t imagine they haven’t made non-quagmire plans. There’s talk of reassembling the Soviet empire but the basis fir such a grand plan seems weak. A series of opportunistic limited wars, yeah…

Another reason this feels weird is that this is not only 2 relatively developed largish countries, but both are white, European countries. White-on-white hot wars have been mostly small-scale civil war type deals since WW2 seems like.

That analysis (white on white war) is I assume what Putin is counting on; an assumption that the west is so far up its own ass in identity politics that it cannot respond coherently to changes in actual reality.
Let’s see how good a bet it is. I’d rate it 50:50

I genuinely expected better than a take like that from you.
If nothing else: "White-on-white wars have been mostly small for a brief period, since the one that was actually the biggest war ever, by far."
What's going on in your head, exactly?
