Media are really powerful. Very few writers manage to transcend their "native" medium they discover when first developing the writing muscles. Not even Nobel-winning novel writers seem able to do it reliably.

This is why I'm always reluctant to call myself a "writer." I'm a "blogger" the way others are "novelists" or "essayists" or "newsletterers" or "screenwriters" or "magazine writers."

I think that there's a seriousness with those labels that feels uncomfortable. I got referred to as an artist a lot while I was working on...art projects and yet the label made me very uncomfortable and I mostly tried to shrug it off. I just work on projects, you know?
