I suspect blockchains are never going to be fast no matter how clever you get with L2s, sidechains, sharding, rollups… Feels like faster-faster is not what this tech “wants.” If so, the soul-gap between Web2 and Web3 may be bigger than the one between steam engines and Web2.

Why? Eng limits are as fast as any database, just costs are higher. If security needs 10,000 replicas, then costs are 10,000x. They are not as fast yet because the cryptography is new and not as optimized. It took 20 years for ssl to get fast enough.
