My Dell monitor has all these USB ports in the back but they don’t seem active. I’m connected to my MBP via hdmi. How do I make the USB ports usable? Do I need a usb-c to usb-a monitor cable? USB can’t pass through hdmi?

Ok, figured it out. Had to connect computer to inbound USB-B (and I had an A to B cable handy in my treasured box of preciousssss old cables) and now all the USB ports are active. Can connect my camera and external wifi keyboard yay. Been 15y since I set up a proper dock.

Ok that appears to have crashed all my cameras 🧐
Had to reboot to get my cameras back

Looks like my monitor doesn’t take usb input for the main display otherwise I could get this docking connection down to 1 cable

Previously, on vgr seeks dumb pebcak twitter tech support, I sorted out a flicker issue with my new macbook pro external monitor (after trying to fix refresh rate and contrast, what actually fixed it was a newer hdmi cable)

I apparently had the exact same problem in 2015 with my previous MBP and previous Dell monitor 🤣

My old 19" dell monitor keeps flickering on/off when I try to connect my MacBook Pro via hdmi to vga convertor. Any clue why and what to do?

Sorry 2016. In 2015 when I was still on a windows machine (ThinkPad), I was having more basic doubts. I basically never learn because Twitter always answers questions for me. twitter.com/vgr/status/647?

Why does my HDMI to VGA adapter come with little side USB cable (for what looks like power charging)? Is it to drive displays on USB power?

To be fair to myself, that was VGA era, so previous version of the same problem.
