We need some lovecraftian cosmic horror. Not the actual thing or even an updated pastiche of it, but an equivalent memeplex that does for the 2020s what his cosmic horror world did for the 1920s. We are so busy being outraged, we have no time to be properly horrified.

Lovecraft saw the Modernist/Einsteinian/Dysonian SETI universe and was horrified, so maybe we should look at the horror of a posthuman/quantum information universe. Except that I don't find it that horrible... but then again, neither did most of Lovecraft's contemporaries.

This is kind of what Houllebecq did, actually. That’s why there was so much initial excitement over him. He will never be that guy now, but that was the early appeal.
