I've installed and uninstalled anaconda a couple of times now... the package update model seems to weirdly break the install unless you are very careful... is there a trick to keeping a stable environment going?

Happy to help. What exactly were you trying to do? Also be advised that M1 support is still just partial, although we are getting very close to full support.

was trying to get set up to play with pytorch, but forgot the exact sequence of things I did that broke it... have it clean installed again now, and will try again

Do you use anaconda for anything other than package management for a Python project? venv has always been cleaner for me

I am failing to even get started and am thinking of just giving up on it and using google collab instead

I interned with Anaconda, working on anaconda, so I might be able to help.
What's your OS, windows/mac/linux? Also how are things breaking exactly.
(A quick screen recording should be the most effective way of share the context in this case)

I would use a docker container to attach it to vs code. There's a bit of a learning curve if you haven't dealt with docker before but it's very stable and clean
