So a surprising learning for me in the last year is that storytelling is MUCH more intuitive with pictures, and words just get in the way of narrative intuitions.

Disagree strongly, though of course that doesn't mean *your* perspective isn't valid.
Full engagement with words often creates a phenomenally deep imaginary world. Commitment from both author and reader required, but there's nothing worthwhile without commitment.
