Verbal acuity is a drug. As it improves in 20s/30s with practice, memories of your old level feel like mute incomprehension. Then when it peaks and starts to drop in 40s, it feels like worsening eyesight.

earlier today I flipped thru these volumes, haphazardly. hard to describe how sustainedly Eliot wrote, even in the most banal context like encouraging the college poetry of a friend's son, letters marked by a desire to accurately translate inchoate emotions & prejudices to words.

Anecdotal as in I personally feel it. The right word takes more effort to recall and you start settling for the wrong word more often. I’m sure with effort it can be reversed but I’m lazy.
