On historical time scales saying capitalism works is like saying cocaine works because it gets you through a busy day, all the while ignoring what using it day after day is doing to body and your chances of survival.

The problem with this analogy is that ‘capitalism’ is a vague ideological label invented by Marx and cocaine is a chemical with defined properties.
Fossil fuels would be a more appropriate in this construction. Capitalism is a fuzzy pattern of commerce that’s always been around.

So has not paying for externalities - my point is we have come to a moment in history where leaving capitalism alone as ‘just the way things are done’ isn’t viable any longer.
