The metaverse is already here. It's just happening more in audio than in avatars. Podcasts (and other audio) are a much larger scale opt-in into the metaverse than games or other virtual experiences.

I’ve had the thought that it started with the Walkman in the 80s. Suddenly and without much comment, since it was pre-internet, the boom box disappeared and people retreated aurally behind headphones. Nobody thought it was weird. Headphones were specialized equipment before.

Dominant idea of metaverse focuses on step change along one dimension: Immersiveness of experience. I think another way to think of it is bringing the participatory read-write of Web2.0 to other sensory modes.
