The Left never did find a good comeback to “NPC” as an insult 🤔
That might have been the best insult of the first 5 years of the culture war

Trying to think of a good comeback at the time felt like that time when George Costanza drive back miles to deliver the “jerk store” comeback

It really didn't seem like something that needed a comeback. Reads as an admission of sociopathy, not an insult.

Have we already forgotten the wide array of NPC memes showing ineffectual progressives performing futile outrage displays?

iirc, there were a lot of NPC memes directed at the right, weren't there? true to the spirit of internet memes, the answer is usually a rehash of a previous concept.

It's hard when the left doesn't have any sense of humor at all, a big strategic weakness.

Hmm. That’s not true though. From Daily Show on, the Left has dominated television political humor. They just suck at the online improv meme war kind.

are people's feelings really hurt by being called ineffectual? I don't find it a particularly bad thing, so it doesn't seem like much of an insult.

What made it funny was the committed humorless frustration of those targeted with the label. They aspired to agency, not shmoodom, but couldn’t rise above performative signaling. The meme called that out. A sharper form of “virtue signaling” as an insult.
