Anyone know where I can get Kerala style plum/rum cake in the Los Angeles area? It’s a seasonal Christmas thing I’ve never managed to find in the US

I mean the trope of a bad baker in the family bringing inedible fruitcake… it’s an American joke afaik. There’s various Indian fruitcakes but no particular jokes or perceptions attached.

I’m a many generations deep American (well New Yorker at least) and never understood the jokes about fruitcake either. The few times I’ve had it I quite liked it but it’s not exactly common. It’s like a vestigial food/joke from some other era

Best bet if you don't make it yourself--which you should--is to seek out a British store and get a tinned plum cake. Try the British Connection or Kitty O'Shea's. They may offer appropriate guidance if they don't have one.
