one of the things that genuinely shocked me when i moved to the US was learning how common it was for old people to own a house and still be insecure in their ability to keep living there post retirement

i meant a fully paid-up house that you were living in yourself. i can understand not being able to keep up mortgage payments if you got unlucky, but i don't think property taxes are this onerous in india, are they?

just anecdotally i've seen some pretty old and shabby houses in decent neighbourhoods in bombay, where clearly the people living there had fallen on harder times but still had the house
